Gluten Allergies

The Difference between Gluten Intolerance and Gluten Allergies

A lot of people think that gluten intolerance and gluten allergies are the same but they are actually completely different conditions. Gluten allergy happens as a result of histamine response. People with gluten allergies will have signs and symptoms similar to other allergic reactions (sneezing, hives, watery eyes, runny nose and abdominal discomfort) that occur immediately after gluten consumption. Gluten intolerance, on the other hand, is entirely different and has different set of symptoms.

Gluten intolerance is a condition where one is sensitive to foods that contain gluten particularly wheat and wheat products. A person with gluten intolerance simply cannot tolerate foods with gluten protein in them. These include food like oats, barley, wheat, rye and oats. The person is basically unable to break down and absorb the protein portion of these foods. One must understand that this condition is not a food allergy, but rather a disorder of not being able to handle foods that has gluten in them. It is far better explained as a digestive system problem and is really a broad name that includes an array of signs and symptoms relating to gluten consumption.

Gluten intolerance can be a sign of celiac disease. This disease is a more serious condition of wheat sensitivity. It is an autoimmune disorder in which an individual will not be able to absorb gluten protein. Basically, celiac disease is really a malabsorption condition that is sometimes commonly known as gluten enteropathy or celiac sprue. Celiac disorder is hereditary and an autoimmune disease that may become asymptomatic once the patient undergo a gluten-free diet. Sadly, it is a long term problem that can only be managed by changing diet habit to a gluten-free diet.

Celiac disease can show itself as anemia because the damaged small intestine is unable to effectively take up iron and vitamin B12 which are important components in the production of red blood cells. There is reduced absorption of vitamins and minerals which can also lead to nutritional insufficiency diarrhea and abnormal weight loss.

Gluten intolerance and/or celiac disease can never be out-grown and those who are gluten intolerant must stay away from gluten all through their life. This however can be simply managed by modifying eating habits which majority of the time eases signs and symptoms. Gluten intolerance is a more common condition compared to gluten allergies, and has less apparent signs and symptoms which can range from minor to severe. Symptoms can be intense and severe with celiac disorder, but typically they really are systemic, not instantaneous like symptoms of wheat allergy.

Gluten Free Diets

A gluten free diet is quite simply a diet that excludes the protein gluten. Gluten is contained in grains such as wheat, rye and barley and these are of course common ingredients in many of the foods we eat every day.

Gluten causes inflammation in the small intestines of people with celiac disease and so a gluten free diet is essential for those who suffer from the disease.

Initially many people find sticking to a gluten free diet quite difficult and restrictive, but over time you will find it quite easy to adapt and eat a range of foods and live a normal lifestyle.

Nowadays most food labellings makes it quite easy to ensure you are sticking to a diet free of gluten, but as a rule of thumb the following are to be avoided in food and drinks -

Wheat
Rye
Barley
Durham
Farina
Graham flour
Kamut
Matzo meal
Semolina
Triticale

Foods made with corn, rice, soy are very good replacements and other gluten free grains are available.

An important thing to bear in mind to be sure your diet is free from gluten is to check food labels to make sure the food may not have been contaminated in production. In other words the food should have been processed in a facility that is free of wheat or other gluten products.

The safest way of all to ensure you stick to a gluten free diet is to use a gluten test kit. Up until recently this was a complex and time consuming process but the market has responded to demand and there are now some very good home gluten tests available.

Celiac sufferers will have regular blood tests to monitor compliance with the gluten-free diet, but a year of unknowingly consuming gluten, even trace amounts, can have serious consequences. Thankfully we now have the option to use a home gluten test kit and have the peace of mind that we are protected from any exposure.

Although they are easy to use, the cost of gluten test kits may put some people off using them but we have to invest in our health and well being and using one really is the only 100% safe way to ensure you maintain a gluten free diet.

If you believe you may be a celiac sufferer you should of course seek professional medical advice. It is also possible to carry out a home gluten test to detect celiac disease by means of a blood sample.

Testing foods for Gluten Content

Whether you have Celiac disease or wish to avoid eating gluten for other reasons, you need an efficient way of testing for gluten in foods. There are solutions that allow you to check for gluten in the food served to you in restaurants, and also to check what you buy at the grocery store. Read about the different ways of testing for gluten.

Grocery items are required to indicate how much gluten they contain, and a lot of stores have a specialized aisle with gluten-free products. However, you might not feel confident trusting these labels. In most countries, it is allowed to advertise a product as being gluten-free if it contains less than a certain quantity of gluten, but technically, it still contains gluten. Labels are not helpful if you need to avoid any kind of exposure to gluten. This is why you need to have a way of testing for gluten in foods

Products such as the GlutenTox Home Gluten Test Kit and other testing kits of that kind, allow you to check for yourself what your food contains. Testing for gluten in foods is easy: apply the test to a portion of the food you are about to eat and within minutes you should be able to tell if your food is gluten free or not. This product allows you to eat out anywhere: order something that should not contain any gluten, run a test, and enjoy your food without having to worry. You could also buy a selection of products advertised as gluten-free at the store, test them and keep a list of which products are actually safe for you. Food manufacturers and producers can opt for the GlutenTox ELISA kit: with this you can test a variety of products, including flour, quickly without having to cook the food.

If you are not allergic to gluten but simply wish to get rid of gluten in your diet, you could also use the GlutenTox method.

Other gluten testing kits allow you to check if your body has absorbed any gluten. If you decide to go on a gluten-free diet, you might not be able to tell the difference at first. Perform these tests regularly to find out if you are successfully avoiding gluten in your diet. If this test shows that you are still eating gluten, find out what you are doing wrong by applying the test previously mentioned on your food sources, and get rid of the food that should not be in your diet.

Testing for gluten in foods is made easier thanks to different ways of testing: take advantage of this and eat what you should.

Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine. It can occur in people of all ages and ethnicities. It occurs in people who are genetically predisposed for the disorder.

Common symptoms are fatigue, diarrhea, and other intestinal problems. Increased screening in recent years has led to a huge surge of diagnosed cases, and in the United States it is estimated that as many as 1 in 105 people suffer from the disorder. Celiac disease is caused by a reaction to the protein gluten.

The most common source of gluten is wheat, although other grains can also cause symptoms. For this reason, people with celiac disease must closely monitor what they eat, and be especially vigilant in avoiding any products containing wheat. If you are experiencing symptoms, visit your doctor for a test. If you have been diagnosed, begin to study what products you can and cannot eat.

The most common symptoms of celiac disease are gastro-intestinal problems. However, the disorder can manifest differently in different people. Therefore, if you experiencing any other symptoms that you cannot explain, such as chronic fatigue, headaches, or simply not feeling normal, it is a good idea to go to your doctor for a test. Your doctor can perform a blood test to see if you have the disorder. Your doctor will talk to you about celiac disease, if you do indeed have the disorder.

The first thing you will have to change is to eliminate all wheat from your diet. This can be extremely difficult at first, but once you figure out what foods you can’t eat and change your lifestyle it will not be terribly hard to do.

Make sure you check the ingredients of every food you eat to make sure it doesn’t contain any wheat. Since the disorder is becoming more commonly known, food labels are increasingly using the label “gluten-free” which will make your life much easier. Also make sure to talk to your friends and family about celiac disease so they will know about your new diet.

A common concern of people diagnosed with celiac disease is going out to eat at restaurants. Many restaurants now include gluten-free options on their menu. This will make it easier to eat out, but some people have such a high intolerance that you also need to watch out for cross-contamination. This can occur when chefs prepare your food with utensils that have previously been used on bread or other foods with gluten. Just talk to your waiter about celiac disease, they will tell the chef and you should be fine to eat the food.
